World-class flatwater kayak competition is nothing new to Newton, 30, a Western Washington University graduate who represented the U.S. in Barcelona and Atlanta. Newton, who was born in Hawaii, will look to summon some of the international-competition sparkle he's shown in past years: He was the first American paddler to win three medals in a single Pan-American Games with a 1995 performance in Argentina. His Olympic event is K4 over 1,000 meters.
