Gail Devers
Seattle
100 hurdles
Devers, who was born in Seattle, survived life-threatening Graves' Disease 10 years ago, which required chemotherapy and radiation. She has three world hurdles titles and two Olympic gold medals in the 100 meters. She almost doubled at the 1992 Games, leading the hurdles until the final barrier, where she fell and then stumbled across the finish line in fifth place. This time, she qualified only in the hurdles. Devers, 33, was fourth in the hurdles in '96, and reset her American record at this summer's Olympic trials at 12.33 seconds. She lives in Alpharetta, Ga., and says she is a "I Love Lucy" addict.
