10 best rotations in history (in order)

TH PITCHER W-L ERA
RH Bob Lemon 23-7 2.72
RH Early Wynn 23-11 2.73
RH Mike Garcia 19-8 2.64
RH Art Houtteman 15-7 3.35
RH Bob Feller 13-3 3.09
1954 Cleveland Indians

Three Hall of Famers — Lemon, Wynn and Feller — led the way to 111 victories, though Feller's best days, admittedly, were behind him. For that reason, some give the nod to Cleveland's '51 rotation, when Feller, Wynn and Garcia each won at least 20, and Lemon won 17.

LH Dave McNally 21-5 2.89
RH Jim Palmer 20-9 2.68
RH Pat Dobson 20-8 2.90
LH Mike Cuellar 20-9 3.08
1971 Baltimore Orioles

The last staff, likely ever, to produce four 20-game winners. The Orioles' spot starter that year was Grant Jackson, who made nine starts and had a 4-3 record.

RH John Smoltz 17-3 2.90
LH Denny Neagle 16-11 3.55
RH Kevin Millwood 17-8 4.08
1998 Atlanta Braves

This stands out among a decade's worth of great Atlanta staffs, though typically the Braves parlayed 106 regular-season wins into an NLCS loss to San Diego.

LH Lefty Williams 22-14 3.91
LH Dickie Kerr 21-9 3.37
RH Eddie Cicotte 21-10 3.26
1920 Chicago White Sox

The only team besides the '71 Orioles to have four 20-game winners. It was fun while it lasted. After the Black Sox scandal broke, in which the White Sox were accused of fixing the 1919 World Series, Williams and Cicotte were banned from baseball.

RH Don Drysdale 13-16 3.42
RH Claude Osteen 17-14 2.85
RH Don Sutton 12-12 2.99
1966 Los Angeles Dodgers

Three Hall of Famers, but it didn't stop them from getting swept in the World Series by Baltimore.

RH George Earnshaw 21-7 3.67
LH Rube Walberg 20-12 3.74
RH Roy Mahaffey 15-4 4.21
1931 Philadelphia A's

Grove was one of the best ever, and at the top of his game in '31. Another Hall of Famer, Waite Hoyt, sneaked his way into 14 starts, going 10-5.

RH Dummy Taylor 16-9 2.66
LH Hooks Wiltse 15-6 2.47
RH Red Ames 22-8 2.74
1905 New York Giants

Mathewson and "Iron Man" McGinnity are in the Hall of Fame. The 117 complete games that year weren't bad, either.

RH Urban Shocker 18-6 2.84
RH George Pipgras 10-3 4.11
LH Dutch Ruether 13-6 3.38
1927 New York Yankees

Granted, they had a lot of offensive help, but Hoyt and Pennock are Hall of Famers, and Shocker won 20 four times. Swingman Wilcy Moore made 12 starts for the Yankees in '27 and had a 19-7 record.

LH Eddie Lopat 18-8 3.47
LH Tommy Byrne 15-9 4.74
LH Whitey Ford 9-1 2.81
1950 New York Yankees

It's hard to pick the best Yankees staff from this era, but '50, with future Hall of Famer Ford bursting on the scene as a rookie, seems the best pick. They also featured a spot starter named Fred Sanford, who probably threw a lot of junk.

LH Vida Blue 20-9 3.28
LH Ken Holtzman 21-13 2.97
RH Blue Moon Odom 5-12 4.49
1973 Oakland A's

Three 20-game winners, one Hall of Famer, this was the core group that helped win three straight World Series titles. Blue Moon Odom was a weak link, but he was one year removed from a 15-6 season.
