WIAA/Seattle Times State Athletes of the Week

Class 4A

Zac Widmer, Walla Walla football — Widmer rushed for 113 yards and returned an interception 57 yards for a touchdown to help the Blue Devils beat Moses Lake 22-6 in a state quarterfinal game.

Jessica Martinez, Eastlake soccer — The junior scored the only goals in a pair of 1-0 victories as the Wolves beat Richland in the state semifinals and Cascade of Everett in the state-title game.

Class 3A

Jeff Wells, Lakes football — Wells completed 26 of 40 passes for a school-record 420 yards and two touchdowns, ran for four more scores and made 12 tackles on defense in the Lancers' 57-55 quarterfinal victory over Tumwater.

Vicky Rodriguez, Kennedy soccer — The junior forward had a goal and an assist in each game as the Lancers beat Hanford in the semifinals and Bellingham in the state-championship game, both by 4-0 scores.

Class 2A

Steven Stoker, Connell football — Stoker rushed for 181 yards and two touchdowns as Connell beat Nooksack Valley 30-10 to advance to the state semifinals.

Heather Howard, Sultan soccer — Howard scored the winning goal in a shootout to lift the Turks to a 1-0 win over defending champ Naches for the state championship.

Class 1A

Ryong Chung, Charles Wright soccer — Chung had two goals in a 3-1 semifinal victory over Seattle Christian and two more in a 3-2 win over Northwest Christian for the state championship.

Sarah Martinez, Cedar Park Christian soccer — Martinez scored the winning goal during a shootout as the Eagles beat Bellevue Christian 2-1 for the state title.

Class B

Kasey Kemmerer, Hunters football — Kemmerer's three touchdown runs (9, 75 and 83 yards) led Hunters to a 54-6 victory over Prescott in the eight-man state quarterfinals.

(There were no Class B girls sports during the week).

The WIAA/Seattle Times State Athletes of the Week are selected by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association and The Seattle Times from nominations by athletic directors around the state.
