WIAA/Seattle Times State Athletes of the Week

Class 4A

Hayley McCoy, Richland girls soccer: The junior midfielder scored two goals in a 4-1 semifinal victory over Redmond, and scored another in the Bombers' 3-0 win over Bellarmine Prep for the state championship. She had scored only six goals in the first 18 games for Richland, which finished 20-0.

Kevin Coad, Evergreen (Vancouver) football — Coad intercepted four passes and returned one 35 yards for a touchdown in a 45-20 state quarterfinal victory over Lake Washington. He also had six receptions for 92 yards for the sixth-ranked Plainsmen (12-0).

Class 3A

Mary Kuder, Lakeside girls soccer — Kuder, a senior, had a goal and an assist in a semifinal victory over previously unbeaten Kennedy, then assisted on Zoe Victor's goal with a perfect corner kick in a 1-0 win over Mercer Island for the state championship. The assist was her 35th of the season. She also had a team-best 25 goals for the Lions (21-0).

Andre Geraghty, O'Dea football: The 6-foot-1, 205-pound senior carried nine times for 106 yards, scoring on runs of 13 and 48 yards, and made eight tackles in a 31-0 state quarterfinal win over Ferndale. His seventh-ranked Irish (11-1) play Kennedy in the semifinals Friday at the Tacoma Dome.

Class 2A

Laurin Eppich, Connell girls soccer — The Eagles goalkeeper turned in shutouts as Connell beat Cashmere 1-0 in a shootout in the state semifinals and South Whidbey 1-0 in a shootout in the championship game. She was one of four Eagles who scored in the shootout against South Whidbey.

Jeremey Teel, La Center football — The senior running back had 177 yards on 21 carries and scored three touchdowns as the 13th-ranked Wildcats from Southwest Washington beat Steilacoom 42-21 in a quarterfinal game. La Center (10-2), which is in the semifinals for the first time, plays No. 1 Meridian in the semifinals Saturday at the Tacoma Dome.

Class 1A

Sarah Martinez, Cedar Park Christian girls soccer — Martinez, a senior forward, had four goals and an assist in a 9-0 semifinal win over Liberty Bell, then scored the only goal as the Eagles from Bothell won their third consecutive 1A/B state title with a 1-0 win over Archbishop Murphy.

Chris Danford, Archbishop Murphy boys soccer — The junior forward scored the tying and winning goals as the Wildcats (18-1-1) stunned defending champion Charles Wright Academy 2-1 for the 1A/B state championship. Danford finished the season with 23 goals and 15 assists.

Class B

No girls nominated.

Steve Engles, Sprague-Harrington football — Engles, a senior quarterback, rushed for 104 yards and three touchdowns, passed for two TDs, intercepted a pass and recovered a fumble in a 46-13 eight-man semifinal victory over Touchet by the Falcons (9-2).

The WIAA/Seattle Times State Athletes of the Week are selected by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association and The Seattle Times from nominations by athletic directors around the state.
