Cory Vombaur, Evergreen (Vancouver) wrestling: Vombaur, a junior, improved to 12-0 by stunning two-time state champion Mike Rodriguez of Kamiakin 6-4 in overtime in the 125-pound final at the Pacific Coast Championships. The tournament at Evergreen High School attracted more than 400 wrestlers from 35 teams in Western states. Randi Richardson, Arlington girls basketball: The 5-foot-7 sophomore guard scored 29 points on 14-of-20 shooting from the field in a 56-54 nonleague victory over Everett, and scored 22 of the Eagles' 36 points in a nonleague loss to Edmonds-Woodway. She is averaging 26.2 points per game and hitting 50 percent of her three-point attempts. Class 3A
Mark Korsak, Bainbridge boys basketball: Korsak, a 6-3 senior guard, scored 21 of his 32 points in the first half, hitting four of six three-point attempts, in a 66-45 nonleague win over North Kitsap. He averages 14.2 points per game. Kelly Hughes, Columbia River girls basketball: Hughes, a senior, had 33 points, eight steals and five assists in the Chieftains' victory over Chehalis. She also had 23 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals in a win over Class 4A Skyview of Vancouver. Class 2A
Justin Reed, Hoquiam boys basketball: Reed scored 19 points as the Grizzlies, ranked No. 1 in the state, knocked off Class 4A Lincoln of Tacoma 58-47 in the South Sound Classic at the Tacoma Dome. Lincoln won back-to-back state 4A championships in 2001 and 2002. Reed connected on five of six three-point attempts. Stacey Fleming, Castle Rock girls basketball: The 6-foot post player had 25 points and 15 rebounds in a win over Toutle Lake. It was her fourth consecutive double-double. In the four-game stretch, she averaged 22.5 points and 14 rebounds while shooting 50 percent from the field and making 72 percent of her free throws. Class 1A
Jeff Downs, Bellevue Christian boys basketball: Downs, a 6-4 freshman forward, had two good games as the Vikings placed second in the Brewster Christmas Tournament. He had nine points, 13 rebounds and five assists in a 63-40 win over previously unbeaten and second-ranked Granger. In the title game, a 67-48 loss to top-ranked Brewster, Downs collected 13 points, eight rebounds and four assists while helping hold 6-6 Gonzaga recruit David Pendergraft to 11 points. Jenn Peterson, Life Christian Academy: Peterson, a junior, helped the Eagles win the La Conner Christmas Tournament for the second consecutive year. She had 17 points, 12 rebounds and five steals in a 41-24 win over Forest Ridge. In the championship game against La Conner, Peterson totaled 20 points, 17 rebounds and seven steals in a 43-32 victory. Class B
Adam Shildmyer, King's West boys basketball: The 6-4 junior combined for 43 points, 19 rebounds and eight steals as the Warriors from Bremerton beat Mount Vernon Christian 72-63 and Class 2A Klahowya 65-50 to win the King's West tournament. Taryn Hanley, King's West girls basketball: Hanley, a 5-6 senior guard, was named MVP of the King's West tournament, averaging 16.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, six steals and four assists in wins over Mount Vernon Christian and 1A Cedar Park Christian. The WIAA/Seattle Times State Athletes of the Week are selected by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association and The Seattle Times from nominations by athletic directors around the state.
