Wednesday, May 4, 2005 - 8:26 p.m. Class 4A Tyler Cheney, Richland baseball: Cheney, a senior who will play at the University of Washington next season, pitched a two-hitter and homered in the top-ranked Bombers' 8-0 win over Walla Walla. He struck out 13 and walked one. Ashley Sellers, Auburn Riverside fastpitch softball: Sellers, a junior, struck out 17 in a one-hit, 1-0 victory over Tahoma. Six days later, she fanned a school-record 19 in a no-hitter against Enumclaw. Class 3A Mark Schubert, West Valley (Yakima) boys soccer: Schubert had a hat trick in the Rams' 4-1 victory over Wapato. Emily Jacobsen, Sammamish girls track and field: Jacobsen, a junior, bettered her Class 3A state bests in the shot put (42 feet, 8 ¾ inches) and discus (122-11). Class 2A Bart Patitucci, Othello boys golf: Patitucci, a junior who has already won two state championships, shot a 3-under-par 67 at Othello Golf Course to lead his team to the conference title. Chelsey York, Sultan girls track and field: York won four medals with personal bests against runners from bigger schools at the Eason Invitational in Snohomish. She was third in the 100 and 200 and fifth in the 400, and ran on the third-place 400 relay. Class 1A John Houck, Bellevue Christian baseball: The freshman tripled and drove in four runs to help the Vikings beat University Prep 14-2 for their first Emerald City League victory. Britt Howell, Concrete fastpitch softball: The sophomore pitcher struck out 18 and walked one in a one-hitter, and went 3 for 4 with a double, triple and three RBI in a 7-0 shutout of Darrington. Class B Justin Powell, Wilbur-Creston boys track and field: Powell, a senior and defending state champion in the high jump, cleared 6-8 at the R&R Invitational in Spokane to tie the state best this season for all school classifications. Brittany Den Hoed, Sunnyside Christian fastpitch softball: Den Hoed went 4 for 7 with a home run and seven RBI to lead the Knights to a doubleheader sweep of Lyle. The WIAA/Seattle Times State Athletes of the Week are selected by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association and The Seattle Times from nominations by athletic directors around the state. |
