Post-game quotes: Minnesota 35, Seattle 9

T.J. Houshmandzadeh: "You can call it a step backwards, say we turned the corner and hit a U-turn, whatever you want to say. We just played terrible today. I didn't break a sweat probably until like 5 minutes left the game."

Jim Mora: "I certainly hoped so, and I felt like we had to a certain extent. Today, we struggled in the run. That's probably the understatement of the year right there."

Mora on attempts to run the ball: "I felt like coming out of last week's that we needed to stick with the run a little bit. I felt like if we gave up on it, we were giving up on something that we truly believe we have to have to be successful. So we tried to stick with it, but there was a point where we were beating our head against the wall."

Game thread

Fourth quarter

Vikings CB Asher Allen just ran a better route than Deion Branch did, breaking out of his cut to pick off Matt Hasselbeck's pass. It's Seattle's second turnover of the game, but just the first committed by the offense. And with that I will sign off from the blog, E-migos, to begin collecting the detritus from this disaster.

Justin Forsett 1 run (pass failed) at 8:05
Minnesota 35, Seattle 9.

Seattle didn't convert a third down in the first three quarters. It did in the fourth, though, as Seattle scored its first touchdown of the game on a 1-yard run by Forsett. Forsett put Seattle in position to score with a 47-yard gain on a screen pass.

Well, even Tarvaris Jackson is throwing for touchdown passes. Yes, it has become that kind of game.

Sidney Rice 34 pass from Tarvaris Jackson (Ryan Longwell kick) at 10:21.
Minnesota 35, Seattle 3.

Well, Minnesota used a replay challenge to sustain its drive, overturning a pass ruled incomplete to Rice. The challenge overturned it.

Third quarter

Olindo Mare 40 field goal at 0:43
Minnesota 28, Seattle 3.

Well, it took Seattle 42 minutes, but the Seahawks finally crossed midfield, and it came on a 37-yard reception by Nate Burleson, who made the catch despite being interfered with. That set up Seattle for a field goal, its first points of the day.

Sidney Rice 7 pass from Brett Favre (Ryan Longwell kick) at 4:08.
Minnesota 28, Seattle 0.

Brett Favre's fourth touchdown pass of the game came against double coverage as he lofted a pass to WR Sidney Rice behind CB Marcus Trufant and S Jordan Babineaux. Coach Jim Mora said this week that Rice had those go-go gadget arms with just a huge extending reach.

Seattle forced a three-and-out on Minnesota's first possession. Seattle has the ball at its own 37, which is 2 yards away from being Seattle's furthest progress in the game. That's scary. The Seahawks ran 19 plays in the first half, they have 61 yards of total offense and minus-6 rushing. Yep. Minus six.

Second quarter

How bad was Seattle's offense in the first half? Well, the Seahawks gave up three second-quarter touchdowns, and the defense hasn't played all that badly. They haven't been able to pressure Brett Favre pretty much at all, but Adrian Peterson hasn't run roughshod over Seattle. The Vikings have just methodically ground them down.

Seattle's longest play of the first half was a kickoff return by Ben Obomanu that resulted in a fumble and set up Minnesota's third touchdown of the second quarter.

The Seahawks committed consecutive false-start penalties on the final drive of the second quarter, the first against Ray Willis and the second against Sean Locklear. Seattle has yet to get the ball past its own 40 in the game.

Bernard Berrian 2 pass from Brett Favre (Ryan Longwell kick)
Minnesota 21, Seattle 0.

Visanthe Shiancoe 8 pass from Brett Favre (Ryan Longwell kick) at 4:57.
Minnesota 14, Seattle 0

Seattle helped the Vikings with a 5-yard offsides penalty against Brandon Mebane -- his second of the game -- and then a tripping penalty against safety Deon Grant that will give Jim Mora at least one play to submit to the league. Not only was Grant blocked into Sidney Rice on the play, but the block itself was dubious as Percy Harvin peeled back on Grant.

Defensive tackle Brandon Mebane has now been penalized twice for offsides.

Seattle has now had four possessions, gained two first downs and has yet to move the ball past its own 40 let alone cross midfield.

Anybody still wanting to see more Seneca Wallace on the field? Seattle just lost 9 yards on a play in which Wallace ran left, saw absolutely no room, and went back the other. Another punt.

One-third of the way through the game, Adrian Peterson has 45 yards rushing, Justin Forsett has three, and it's shaping up like a game that if Minnesota is patient, it's just going to wear Seattle down.

Percy Harvin 23 pass from Brett Favre (Ryan Longwell kick) at 10:05.
Minnesota 7, Seattle 0

If Brett Favre has 3 seconds to stand in the pocket without having anyone get within an arm's reach and he's going to find an open receiver, and that's just what happened. On first-and-10 from the Seattle 24, Favre zipped a fastball to Harvin, who settled into an opening away from David Hawthorne and scored the first points of the game.

Counting up Jim Mora's grievances

Want a little chuckle this morning? Check out DJ Gallo's humorous take on Jim Mora's list of 17 -- count 'em 17 -- plays he wanted reviewed.

"6. So I'm talking to a group of officials about a questionable call in the first quarter, and one of them clearly had onions for breakfast. Like maybe an onion bagel. Or an everything bagel. Or an omelet with onions. Anyway, someone's breath stunk. And I didn't appreciate it. I think it was the line judge."

It should be noted that Gallo is a humor columnist, a satirist. That's his gig so he's not a football reporter who's taking Mora.

Darnell Dockett fined $7,500 for his elbow to the throat of Hasselbeck

Fine amounts from Sunday's games have been confirmed. Arizona defensive tackle Darnell Dockett was fined $7,500 for the second-quarter play in which he shoved his elbow against quarterback Matt Hasselbeck's neck.

That was one of three fines levied against Arizona. Cornerback Bryant McFadden ($5,000 for facemask) and Beanie Wells ($5,000 for blow to Deon Grant's head) were also fined.

The Seahawks had two players fined. Safety Jordan Babineaux was fined $7,500 for his horse-collar tackle of Anquan Boldin and safety Deon Grant was fined $5,000 for his part in the Wells' play.

Absent from that list of fines? Coach Jim Mora, which means that he didn't cross any lines with what he said regarding the officiating of the game.

Mike Holmgren insinuates no meeting in Cleveland

On his weekly radio show on KJR-AM with Dave Mahler and Hugh Millen, former Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren did not flatly deny a meeting with Cleveland owner Randy Lerner earlier this week, but he insinuated that there hasn't been a summit with the Browns boss. At least not yet.

"I hope it's true some day that we get a chance to talk," Holmgren said to Mahler's question.

The topic arose because earlier this week former Browns great Jim Brown was speaking at a luncheon when he said Lerner was meeting at that moment with one of the great football minds. Someone asked if it was Holmgren, and while Brown didn't confirm that, he said, "You said it, I heard it."

When Holmgren was asked whether a meeting with Lerner was fact or fiction on Friday, he continued, "I absolutely would love to talk to him about the possibility of working," Holmgren said. "But until that happens, you guys will be the first to know."

This might be the most perfect demonstration of the sidestepping and ducking and feinting that occurs this time of year when it comes to playing footsie for potential jobs. Brown strongly hints that a meeting with Holmgren is taking place without stating it, and Holmgren insinuates that no such meeting took place without saying it directly.

The best guess as to what is happening? Well, there's some back-channel communication taking place that likely includes Holmgren's agent, but there has not been a direct sit-down meeting between Holmgren and Browns ownership. At least not yet.

All indications are that Holmgren will not make a decision about his future until after the season ends.

CB Josh Wilson doubtful because of a concussion

The Seahawks have not released their injury report yet, but it's uncertain whether cornerback Josh Wilson will be available. He sat out practice on Wednesday and Thursday after suffering a concussion during Sunday's game. Wilson came back to finish the game.

If he isn't ready to play, Kelly Jennings will start at right cornerback ahead of Ken Lucas. Has there been a switch at the position?

"Josh has won the position," coach Jim Mora said.

If he's not available, it becomes a decision as to who is playing better at the time, Jennings or Lucas.

Center Chris Spencer and left tackle Sean Locklear both will be starting.

Seahawks injury report

OUT: RB Julius Jones. DOUBTFUL: CB Josh Wilson (concussion).

QUESTIONABLE: DT Craig Terrill (shoulder). PROBABLE: Chris Spencer (thumb/back), CB Marcus Trufant (concussion).

Vikings injury report

DOUBTFUL: CB Antoine Winfield (foot). QUESTIONABLE: WR Bernard Berrian (hamstring), CB Karl Paymah (ankle). PROBABLE: CB Benny Sapp (groin), FB Naufalu Tahi (ankle), QB Brett Favre (groin/hip), LB E.J. Henderson (knee), DE Jayme Mitchell (illness).

Out: Definitely will not play. Doubtful: At least 75 percent chance of not playing. Questionable: 50-50 chance of not playing. Probable: Virtual certainty to be available for normal duty.

Force it to Forsett?

Time for a feature on everyone's favorite story: Justin Forsett. I'm going to have to confess that I haven't been part of the chorus calling for more, more, more opportunities for him. I wasn't outraged when the Seahawks lost him to Indianapolis for a couple of weeks last season.

But gaining 123 yards against Arizona last week went a long way to convincing me Seattle needs to take a good long look at him to see if he's the latest in a long line of overlooked and underestimated running backs who thrive in that zone-blocking scheme.

Patience pays off for Justin Forsett
By Danny O'Neil, The Seattle Times

Seahawks' Forsett aiming for consistency
By John Boyle, The Everett Herald

Update: Duly noted comment from Tom Page.
Last word on Hutchinson: "HE'S A GUARD"

Dave Wyman liked Steve Hutchinson as a Seahawk, too. Wyman even says he could go down as one of the best guards to play the game, but Wyman also has a pretty clear perspective on the priority of that position in the NFL in his most recent blog entry:

"HE'S A GUARD!!! Alex Gibbs, the offensive line coach in Denver when I played there is one of THE finest football coaches in the league (He's now with the Texans). His favorite quote to his offensive line was, 'Hell, I can get a bum on the highway to play guard! Get me a good left tackle!
-- Dave Wyman

Wyman is a former Seahawk linebacker, a second-round draft pick who now works with ESPN 710 AM and provides great perspective on his blog. I would keep going on, but just go ahead and read his blog entry because he provides a different perspective on the Seahawks' treatment of Hutchinson. By using the transition tag, Seattle put Hutchinson in a favorable situation:

"This allowed him to go out and shop himself on the open market and then come back to the Hawks and say, "If you want to keep me, here's what everyone else out there thinks I'm worth."
-- Dave Wyman

Wednesday's injury report

Seattle cornerbacks Josh Wilson and Marcus Trufant did not practice Wednesday because of concussions presumably suffered in Sunday's game in Arizona. Both finished the game. Trufant went down after he was the first to make contact with Arizona running back Tim Hightower on the Cardinals' fourth-and-1 attempt in the first half. Linebacker Leroy Hill finished Hightower off for a turnover on downs. Trufant stayed down after the play, but came off the field on his own.

Wilson was injured later in the first half, but recovered, jogged off the field on his own and returned to play in the game.

Seahawks injury report

Out: RB Julius Jones. Did not practice: DT Craig Terrill (shoulder), CB Marcus Trufant (concussion) and CB Josh Wilson (concussion).

Vikings injury report

Did not practice: DT Fred Evans (illness). Limited in practice: WR Bernard Berrian (hamstring), CB Benny Sapp (groin), FB Naufalu Tahi (ankle), CB Antoine Winfield (foot), QB Brett Favre (groin/hip).

On second thought: T.J. Houshmandzadeh's flirtation with Minnesota

T.J. Houshmandzadeh visited two teams in free agency, first coming to Seattle and then heading to Minnesota.

Seahawks coach Jim Mora kept a Breitling watch as collateral, the Vikings used a ruse to get rid of a limousine designated to take Houshmandzadeh to the airport.

Houshmandzadeh felt comfortable with Vikings coach Brad Childress, thought owner Zygi Wilf was "super cool" and counted running back Adrian Peterson among the assets.

"They had a great run game," Houshmandzadeh said of Minnesota. "They had a great offensive line and the offensive line is the backbone of every team, but when it came down to it I felt like the quarterback situation -- which kind of makes a receiver go -- it was a better situation here so I did what any receiver would do."

But that situation has now changed with Brett Favre coming out of retirement to play for the Vikings. Would his decision have been different had he known?

"I don't know," Houshmandzadeh said. "It's hard to say, 'What if, what if?' So you make the decision at the time that was best.

"I tried to look at everything and I talked to a lot of people and the process, different coaches throughout the NFL, and got advice what they thought was best for me. People that I really trust. And I would say it was split even with him not there and so I just had to do what I thought was best."

Quarterback Matt Hasselbeck has some thoughts on what might have been if the Vikings' situation under center were different.

"I'm just glad Brett didn't come out of retirement around that time because he just probably would have picked Brett," Hasselbeck said in a conference call with Minnesota reporters Wednesday.

So with the Seahawks 3-6 and the Vikings 8-1, is he having second thoughts?

"As of right now, it doesn't look like it was the best decision," Houshmandzadeh said. "But it's very early in the process, you know. I feel like I can play a lot more years, you know. I feel great, and so you can't just say one year, 'Oh it was a bad decision.' I feel like I can play a long time because I feel good. I haven't played a lot of football early in my career. Knock on wood, I've never had a major injury so I feel like I can play a lot more years to come so ask me that in some more years and we'll get an answer."

Poll position: Tim Ruskell's future as Seahawks president

The Seattle Times' Steve Kelley began his column by talking about an executive hired to run a team that had assembled a talented nucleus of players, already had a coach in place and won a conference championship in his first year.

The Seahawks' Tim Ruskell. Well, him, too, but Kelley's analysis began with Wally Walker, former Sonics personnel poobah. It's a compelling comparison.

Sound familiar? Seattle GM's poor decisions hurt franchise
By Steve Kelley, The Seattle Times

Wednesday site seeing

So there's this guy in Minnesota who used to be a pretty big deal around here. Maybe you've heard of him: Steve Hutchinson. Maybe you've heard too much about him since he slipped out with an end run a running back would be proud of. Hazy on the details? Take a look back.

Another reminder of Hutchinson fiasco
By Danny O'Neil, The Seattle Times

During his conference call with Seattle reporters on Wednesday, Minnesota coach Brad Childress was asked about it, and he mixed some humor with great analysis of the situation.

Q: It's still a sore spot out here a little bit, Steve Hutchinson, how has he changed the way your line plays?

Childress: Well, the Big Show's not there anymore so is it still sore?

Q:I think so. Yeah, fans will still get here. I'm pretty sure a trash can gets kicked every time he's mentioned.

Childress: Well, you're just not as mean-spirited out there as say if he left Philadelphia. It wouldn't just be a trash can getting kicked. I'm sorry. I lost the question. Go ahead.

Q: How has he affected your line? Has he become a cornerstone element in that line?

Childress: Well, I don't look at it much differently as at Philadelphia we signed one of his Michigan running mates in Jon Runyan. The statement and the player had a couple different things.

Number one: Serious about wanting to make improvement.

Number two: You're getting a guy that's an All-Pro guy that's a tough man. That lends something to how you say you want to play the game in there. And I know at the time everybody looked at the contract and said it was ridiculous and all that, but really, the price of poker has gone up it's probably nominal now for a good free agent.

Paul Allen diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma

Since this is a blog dedicated to Seattle's pro-football franchise, I considered identifying Paul Allen as the Seahawks owner. However, to hang any title on him is to diminish his overall significance in our area as a businessman, technological pioneer and the person who kept the Seahawks in Seattle by purchasing them.

Allen has been diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma. Here's a link to the update from The Seattle Times business staff.

Mora sends 17 plays for NFL to review, including forearm to Hasselbeck's throat

Quarterback Matt Hasselbeck had trouble breathing after Arizona defensive tackle Darnell Dockett thrust his forearm into Hasselbeck's throat after a second-quarter sack in Sunday's game.

A day after the game, coach Jim Mora still had a tough time swallowing that and 16 other plays from Seattle's 31-20 loss to Arizona.

"I turned in 17 plays to the National Football League officiating office today, which is probably three times as many as I have in any game," Mora said Monday. "So whether or not were legitimate pass-interference calls, I'm still waiting to hear back from the league on."

One of those plays was a second-quarter sack of Hasselbeck. The sack was credited to Cardinals linebacker Clark Haggans. After Hasselbeck was tackled, Dockett landed on top of him and had his forearm underneath Hasselbeck's facemask on his neck. A television camera captured Dockett pushing down with his forearm on Hasselbeck, who rubbed his throat after he got up, obviously affected. There was no penalty called on the play.

"I didn't see it until today," Mora said Monday. "If they're not going to call it -- and it's a vicious game -- and they're not going to call it, I don't know. I don't like it when it's our quarterback, but if they're not going to call it then I'd like to see our guys do it to their quarterback. If they're not going to call it.

"I don't know what the rule is. I haven't heard back yet so I don't know what they're seeing there. But if that's not going to be called, then we should be doing it."

But shouldn't that be a play that is called for a penalty?

"Yeah," Mora said. "Absolutely, but if it's not going to be then we should be doing it."

That's some biblical stuff right there. An eye for an eye, a choke for a choke. A coach can't really advocate for his team to respond in kind to that kind of play can he?

"If it's legal I can," Mora said. "If it's illegal than it would be called. If it's legal then we should be doing it. If it's legal. I would never advocate us doing anything that's illegal nor would I advocate us doing anything would hard -- intentionally harm -- another player.

"But if that's legal, if the league is not going to call that then we should be doing it because it has an effect on the quarterback when he can't breathe. When Matt's getting up (making choking/gagging/wheezing sounds) and he can't breathe, boy, I'd like to see their quarterback doing that. It's a vicious game."

But don't you think the referees just missed that call?"I don't know," Mora said. "I can't tell you because I haven't heard back from them and even when I do, I can't tell you."

Update: This being the Internet era of instant communication, Darnell Dockett has already addressed the matter via his Twitter feed @ddockett. "Dear coach mora, its football (stuff) happens if u ever played the game ud understand, really I would try to hurt matt. He's a good guy."

An earlier post from Dockett -- which has since been deleted -- read, "Look lets me make this clear, the forarm to Matt Hasselbeck was by accident TRUST ME I like matt and got mad respect for him."

Mora did not elaborate on each of the 17 plays, however, one was the pass-interference penalty on Josh Wilson in the first quarter when he was defending Larry Fitzgerald.

"The one where Fitzgerald grabbed him by the facemask and pulled his head down?" Mora asked rhetorically. "Yeah. I questioned that one. We'll see what they say."

Note

Mora was asked about New England's decision to for it on fourth-and-2 inside its own 30 on Sunday night. "Who am I to say?" Mora asked, laughing. "I went for it on for fourth-and-1 on the 38 last week and it was the first quarter. That's a tough call. I'm not going to second guess Bill Belichick, I can promise you that."

On Seattle's third possession against Detroit, Seattle was stopped on fourth-and-1 on its own 38, turning the ball over on downs.

Julius Jones bruised but not broken

Julius Jones suffered a bruised chest, coach Jim Mora said, and not a broken rib as he initially thought after the game.

Mora clarified the injury during his radio show on KIRO-FM Monday morning.

The bruised chest caused bleeding into Jones' lungs, and he remained in Arizona last night at the hospital after the team left.

"It wasn't a rib. It's a bruise causing bleeding in his lungs," Mora said, according to a summary on the team's official Web site. "It doesn't appear to be anything real serious. It's serious obviously or he wouldn't be in a hospital, but it's something he'll recover from quickly.

"We're certainly thinking of him and wishing him the best. It's tough when you have to leave a guy behind in the hospital. That weighs on everyone's minds."

Jones suffered the injury while blocking a blitzing linebacker in the first quarter of Sunday's game in Arizona. He carried only twice before suffering the injury. In his place, Justin Forsett rushed for 123 yards, a career-high.

Monday afternoon surprise: Seahawks surprisingly competitive

Monday programming: We resume our regularly scheduled weekly programming with a look at just how surprising Seattle's game was. Please add your own surprises and remember our weekly Tuesday chat at noon.

How much have things changed in the NFC West? Well, the Arizona Cardinals were talking as if they were relatively unimpressed by beating the Seahawks by double digits at home. Seattle doesn't quite carry the clout it used to have when it was reeling off four consecutive division titles.

"It wasn't the prettiest game," said Arizona safety Adrian Wilson to The Arizona Republic. "But it wasn't the ugliest game, either. We got the win, ended their season."

Hmmm, the Cardinals acting with relative indifference over a comeback victory against the Seahawks. If I told you that two years ago, it would have been shocking. But on Sunday? Not so much. It was the sixth time in seven games Arizona has beaten Seattle. Click on the link as we quantify the surprises from Sunday's game in Arizona.

Game over: Cardinals 31, Seahawks 20

Seattle scored the first 14 points of the game, Arizona the final 14. And in the wake of losing to Arizona for the sixth time in the last seven games, there are some news updates.

RB Julius Jones suffered a broken rib, and he was at the hospital by the second half. Coach Jim Mora said Jones will remain at the Phoenix hospital overnight. There is nothing life-threatening but he obviously suffered a significant injury.

Update: ESPN's Adam Schefter reports Jones has bleeding in his lung, which is why he was kept overnight.

The question has come up repeatedly regarding the down-and-distance situation in the third quarter. Cardinals ball, second-and-2 at the Seattle 7. Kurt Warner passed to Larry Fitzgerald for a 4-yard gain. There was a dead-ball personal foul called against Beanie Wells after the play. That pushed Arizona back 15 yards.

Now, there was a question from some readers about whether it should have been first-and-goal from the 19 or first-and-10 from the 19. According to Mike Pereira, NFL's officiating poobah, in that situation with a dead-ball personal foul following a first down it is always first-and-10 with one exception. If the penalty is for abuse of an official.
