The cost: A typical driver would pay about $52 more a year If the initiative is rejected, the new gas tax will be phased in over four years. At 31 cents a gallon, Washington now is tied with Rhode Island for the seventh-highest gas tax in the nation. Hawaii has the highest, and Alaska has the lowest.
