What two issues concern you most in the race? Public Safety. Public Safety must continue to be government's No. 1 priority. Since I was elected, we have added 40 new deputies, construction of a new jail without new taxes, focused resources on the declared War on Meth and brought the law and justice leadership in the county to focus on system improvements for the taxpayers rather than for the benefit of individual departments. Transportation. Relieving congestion must be dealt with. Since I was elected, we have funded and built two new major east-west cooridors in my district: Cathcart Way and Lundeen Parkway. I voted for the first increase in developer mitigation fees in over 10 years, over a 30 percent increase. From 1997 to 2001, the fund balance in mitigation fees grew from $14 million to over $24 million under the previous council. We have applied this important revenue source to the roads in my district and brought the balance back down to $12 million, even with the influx of increased revenue from the 30 percent increase in fees and the current housing boom in the county. I promised to fix Hewitt Avenue in Lake Stevens during my last campaign. 2007 will see construction of over $30 million of construction improvements to include widening Hewitt to five lanes, installation of intersection improvements for safety and congestion relief, and a major reconstruction of the Highway 9/Hewitt Ave. intersection.
