Questions for candidatesWhat are the biggest differences between you and your opponent(s)? Experience and knowledge. I have thirty years of experience in the private sector and nearly twenty-five years experience as an elected official in all facets of local government. What are your highest priorities for state government? If you had to close the projected $1 billion gap between state government revenues and expenses, how would you do it? To deliver the high quality and cost effective results from each functions of state government Because of the way we do budgeting in the legislature, we almost guarantee a large gap each biennium. In essence, we begin with what was previously budgeted, escalate it and then add new ideas. Until the executive introduced the Priorities of Government approach, we always looked at spending, never what the state bought. The Legislature has not yet accepted that approach. Moving away from budgeting and measuring spending to measuring results should be a top priority. Do you support the initiative to raise the sales tax 1 penny to raise money for schools and higher education? Yes. Are you happy with Washington's new primary? Are you supporting the initiative that would give Washington a "top 2" primary system that the parties oppose? No. I was a leader on the House floor in passing a primary which allowed voters to cross party lines. Because the governor vetoed that bill, I worked to get it on the ballot as I-872 this fall to restore Washington voter’s freedom of choice. What do you think of the initiative to expand the use of slot machines to reduce taxes? I oppose the expansion of slot machines in the state.
