Campaign theme: Kathy Huckabay
A PROVEN TRUSTED LEADER
It’s time for a leader who will set partisanship aside and focus on the issues that matter to us. It’s time to send a dedicated and accomplished leader to serve as our voice in Olympia. It’s time for Huckabay to be our State Senator.
While others look for quick fixes, Huckabay works for solutions. When local citizens needed a stronger government, she listened, collaborated, studied and helped lead the effort to create the City of Sammamish. Today Huckabay serves as Mayor of an efficient, responsive new city.
Kathy Huckabay has restored citizen’s trust and confidence in local government. She knows how to prioritize and work with diverse interests. Kathy will find a way when all else seems to fail.
Huckabay will put her experience as a leader in local government and accomplished business owner to work for all of the citizens of the 5th district. She’s committed to finding solutions to the challenges facing our state.
• Cost-effective transportation alternatives and increased capacity on our existing roads and highways.
• Access to affordable health care.
• First rate public schools, colleges and retraining opportunities for adults.
An efficient and accountable state government that delivers the services we need, protects our quality of life and plans for the future.
Kathy Huckabay shares our values. She’s proven that she’ll get the job done.
Kathy Huckabay is the voice the 5th district needs in Olympia.
Questions for candidates
What are the biggest differences between you and your opponent(s)? As Mayor of Sammamish, I bring diverse groups of people together to focus on issues that matter to our community. As a CPA, I'm paid to create solutions rather than divisions. In short, I am a solution oriented team player who can draw upon my business, municipal, and volunteer experience to set budget priorities, make prudent decisions about revenue and expenses, increase the transparency and accountability of how we spend our state’s dollars and renew trust in public service.
What are your highest priorities for state government? If you had to close the projected $1 billion gap between state government revenues and expenses, how would you do it? a) Create a business climate that makes it attractive for companies to locate and expand here; cost-effective transportation alternatives to increase capacity on existing roads.
2) Investing in our education system, from early learning through K-12,as well as higher education and job retraining programs to enable our citizens to participate in a competitive world economy.
3) Providing access to affordable health care.
create a level playing field and broaden the tax base by eliminating tax credits that are not providing anticipated benefits when granted and supporting the multi-state plan to tax internet sales transactions; it can generate an estimated $30 mil while protecting our main street businesses from unfair competition. I would look to streamline the delivery of court, criminal justice and DSHS services.
Do you support the initiative to raise the sales tax 1 penny to raise money for schools and higher education? Yes. Voters in my district tell me that they support additional taxes for education if the money goes into the classroom where it can reduce class size and improve the performance of our children.
Are you happy with Washington's new primary? Are you supporting the initiative that would give Washington a "top 2" primary system that the parties oppose? No.
No.
What do you think of the initiative to expand the use of slot machines to reduce taxes? I am opposed to the expansion of gambling to reduce taxes, Initiative I-892. It is not good for the state or for Indian Tribes, sovereign nations using gambling as a means to economic independence and investing in the betterment of their members to address health, mental health, substance abuse and underemployment problems.
