Describe your philosophy on how the state should manage its public lands. Talk specifically about how you would approach resolving conflicts between
resource protection and resource use or extraction.
| |
I've always strived to involve everybody in finding ways to better our lives. I'll continue that as lands commissioner, working together to manage our state's lands so that we protect the environment, save salmon and wildlife, and use technically advanced plantings, harvests and marketing to maintain revenues for building schools. |

| 2. |
How would you balance management of state-owned timber lands for
recreation, so that natural resources -- such as threatened or endangered
species -- are protected, but money for school construction is maximized?
| |
Protecting our environment allows us to develop "green" certification programs that increase the value of timber cut from our lands. So does planting and harvesting short-rotation-hybrid poplars for high-quality milled lumber for jobs and diversification of our rural economy. Good environmental policy is good economic policy. |

What do you think should be done about people who live illegally aboard
boats?
| |
I'm not interested in ending a Northwest tradition of living aboard boats. But those who use public lands have to do so legally, be nonpolluting, pay market rents and not interfere with other legitimate users. We need to work together to accommodate live-aboards and other users, to benefit all. |
