Describe your philosophy on how the state should manage its public lands. Talk specifically about how you would approach resolving conflicts between
resource protection and resource use or extraction.
|
 |
| |
As a native Washingtonian, I grew up a conservationist and an environmentalist. No set of issues is more important to me than protecting, preserving and enhancing our public lands and water. These unique natural resources strengthen our economy, add to our quality of life and define our Northwestern values. My job is to keep it that way! |
| |
| 2. |
How would you balance management of state-owned timber lands for
recreation, so that natural resources -- such as threatened or endangered
species -- are protected, but money for school construction is maximized?
|
 |
| |
Does it still make sense for us to be harvesting one legacy, our forests, for the benefit of another, our children? As commissioner of public lands, I will lead this discussion collaboratively with ALL stakeholders in the system. Some timber revenues can be enhanced by planting additional quick-harvest species and marketing secondary products. |

| 3. |
What do you think should be done about people who live illegally aboard
boats?
|
 |
| |
People who live aboard boats in approved marinas, pay fair-market rents and have approved sanitation systems require no action. They provide safety and security for other boaters and are a good source of revenue for the state. |
