Focus on learning, improvements in every school.

1.  Do you support or oppose the proposal to establish charter schools in Washington state? Explain why.
I support innovative public-school models that give educators and kids new learning opportunities with accountability for results on our state academic standards. I'd like to do this without charters, but we haven't. I'll vote against the initiative but do my best to fulfill its intent constructively if it passes.

2.  How would you use your office, which has no budget authority, to improve public schools?
I will continue to provide leadership to build on the gains our kids have made in the past four years. I listen to the best educators and community leaders and develop a policy and budget agenda that keeps us improving. Then I influence the Legislature to act for our kids.

3.  Is reform needed in the financing of public schools? If so, what would you propose?
If we want all kids to achieve 21st-century skills, we must expand learning time for struggling kids, give teachers quality time to perfect their teaching, connect our kids to the power of the Internet, and transform teaching and school leadership. We have been funding for inputs, now we must fund for results.
