Candidate bios

Gary Locke Here is what gubernatorial candidate Gary Locke said about taxes, poverty, and homelessness.

Property taxes

Candidate did not respond to property tax questions.

Poor and Homeless

I support the following principles regarding the poor and homeless:

  • Provide tax incentives for companies to hire and train homeless people who want to work.

  • Increase spending on homeless shelters and/or low-income housing.

  • Increase spending on programs that help alcoholics and drug addicts recover and find steady work.

  • Increase the minimum wage so that all full-time workers have incomes above the poverty level.

  • Implement enterprise zones in communities with high unemployment.

welfare

I support the following principles regarding the state welfare system:

  • Require unwed teenage mothers to live with a parent or guardian and attend school to receive benefits.

  • Provide child care to welfare recipients who work or attend school.

  • Increase spending on programs to help homeless find shelter and employment
