| THOMAS JAMES HURST / THE SEATTLE TIMES |
| Pete Soderquist, the Methow Valley ranger district's fire-management officer, discusses the blaze that took four firefighters' lives July 10. Soderquist led the initial attack on what was to become the Thirty Mile Fire. An unusual shift in the weather turned the inferno against a group of 21 firefighters shortly after a pumper crew left them to refill. Fourteen of those 21 were trapped and deployed emergency shelters. Of that group, only 10 survived. |
