Driving represented both independence and danger for Betsy. It was her job to chauffeur the kids to school. But she would grow flustered if she had to detour for road construction or if traffic was heavy. Jeff didn’t want to force the matter (“I just wonder how we should make that decision,” he said earlier this year) and was relieved when Betsy decided on her own to give up her car keys.
