"Pony girl" Lisa Baze, 50, leads a horse and jockey to the start, something the former jockey began doing when she was 11. "We are here as escorts, to calm the horses down, give them like a security blanket," she says.
The horses and jockeys are the stars at a racetrack. But there are hundreds of people behind the scenes. Here are five of their stories.
Red Sox beat Seattle Mariners, 6-3
Seattle Mariners pitchers Felix Hernandez, J.J. Putz and Brandon Morrow put on a strong showing, but the Boston Red Sox beat Seattle 6-3 in 12 innings at Safeco Field. Sean Green got the loss, Jonathan Papelbon the win and Seattle skidded toward Toronto on a five-game losing streak.
