Nisqually Quake

What happened Wednesday

Scientists expected to see stronger movement from the 6.8-magnitude quake. Ground movement was less than half what it should have been in Seattle, for reasons scientists have yet to decipher.

Liquefaction was also less evident where scientists thought it might have been along the Seattle and Tacoma waterfronts. But the ground did move - as much as 10 millimeters in different directions around the region.

The arrows on the graphic below represent a sampling of how far the ground moved and where. The lengths of the arrows represent different distances.
