A threat to men's health

Prostate cancer — the second leading cause of cancer death in men — will claim an estimated 30,000 lives this year. Some facts about the disease:

Prostate cancer
A malignancy that develops in cells of the prostate, a gland found only in men

Main symptoms*
· Inability to urinate
· Frequent or painful urination
· Blood in urine
· Lower back pain

Most at risk
· Men over age 65
· African-American men
· Men who have a close relative with the disease
*These symptoms can also indicate benign conditions

Early detection

Recommendations for all men over age 50 and younger men who are at higher risk for the disease:

· Annual exam of the prostate gland Treatment
· New research is changing guidelines for who should have the PSA (blood test for prostate-specific antigens) screening and how often. See related story. Therapy can include surgery, radiation, chemotherapy or hormones, and lifestyle changes.
