How state spending has grown
Total state spending -- from the general fund and scores of other state accounts -- has grown almost every year since 1981. But on average, spending grew faster in the 1980s than in the 1990s. Based on the budget passed this year, state spending is projected to drop next year. However, the Legislature could change that when it convenes again in January.
