Where was the basset hound? He should have been sitting on the banquette next to his master, begging for charcuterie: a morsel of cured veal tongue, a sliver of silky-sweet chicken liver. And what of the terrier that belonged under the bar, curled at the feet of her mistress who sits sipping coffee, ignoring a complimentary madeleine, blowing smoke and dreaming of last night's indiscretion? Absent the canine companions, everything about this tiny Frenchified hangout is deliciously dead-on.
