Storm forward Katie Gearlds out for 2010 season
Posted by Jayda Evans
The Storm will not have SF Katie Gearlds this summer due to a left knee injury. The season-ending injury was suffered in an overtime loss to Phoenix in August 2009. Gearlds, who shot a career-best 40.4 percent from three-point range, rehabilitated the injury and returned to practice with Seattle. She never felt comfortable enough to join the Storm in the postseason, however.
Gearlds (pictured right by the WNBA) played in Greece to further work out the kinks in her game. But she recently suffered a setback.
"I am at peace with this decision," Gearlds said in a released statement.
Coach Brian Agler, who's also the team's director of player personnel, will suspend Gearlds' contract for 2010 like the team did with C Janell Burse in 2008. Agler has already found possible replacements in second-round draft pick Tanisha Smith and training-camp invitee Aja Parham, who nearly topped Gearlds for the roster spot last year.
Agler also had returning posts Camille Little and Ashley Walker work on their perimeter game to float between the forward positions. He also re-signed Lindsey Wilson, the former Iowa State and Roosevelt standout who was a practice player for Seattle in the past.
Gearlds, a 6-foot-1 former Purdue standout, will spend part of her rehabilitation in her native Indiana and the other in Seattle. But the Storm isn't certain when she'll return.
