Seattle University redshirt freshman out for season
Posted by Jayda Evans
Seattle University freshman post Carley Butcher is out for the season with a torn left ACL. She suffered the injury with 12:38 remaining in the opening half of her team's five-point loss to Washington on Wednesday. It was Butcher's only minute on the court.
Butcher was running to get into her team's offense during transition and appeared to stumble into Washington senior wing Sami Whitcomb. They tangled and dropped to the court, Butcher immediately writhing in pain as play continued. An injury timeout was called with the Huskies up 11-8 and Butcher was helped off the floor.
Further evaluation was completed today and Butcher was ruled with a torn ACL, according to a Twitter posting by first-year coach Joan Bonvicini. Butcher was a medical redshirt last season, injuring her right knee and needing a brace. The native Canadian averaged 3.2 points in six games in 2008 and improved to 5.5 points and 2.2 rebounds in 11 matchups this year.
"Shout out to our post player Carley Butcher:) Out for the season with an ACL injury during the UWash game. We love you...stay strong!!," wrote Bonvicini on the social-networking site.
The loss of Butcher hurts morale and depth inside for the Redhawks (2-9), but the program may gain a player in sophomore G Elle Kerfoot. She was suspended by the school for failing to meet the requisite credit hours for the last spring quarter. SU applied for reinstatement of her, F Breanna Salley and F Mercedes Alexander with the NCAA.
A source said Alexander and Salley could be reinstated, too, but that decision may not be made until later this month. Word on Kerfoot could come as early as Friday, which would mean she could play in Monday's home game against Saint Mary's. Kerfoot averaged 6.6 points and 3.4 boards last season.
Butcher, who's 6-foot-1, isn't the first in the area to suffer from a season/career-ending knee injury. Washington's F Lydia Young and PG Amanda Johnson, a walk-on, are out after surgeries. And Washington State, which plays Montana State on Friday night, lost German freshman G Ireti Amojo to a season-ending knee injury in practice last month.
