Interesting read on the WNBA and social media
Posted by Jayda Evans
You've probably heard stories about Mark Cuban being fined by the NBA for comments made on his Twitter account and the various hide-and-seek challenges created by athletes from Shaquille O'Neal to Tony Hawk. But the WNBA is one of the more active leagues on the social media forum, using Twitter to cultivate and distribute stories mainstream media isn't covering.
The league jumped on the site in November 2008 and Candace Parker (@Candace_Parker) is its most popular player with more than 29,000 followers. All 13 teams have accounts, including the Storm (@seattlestorm). It has been interesting to watch the moving parts communicate with each other, destroy the English language and create intriguing marketing giveaways to get people out to games.
Blogger Cheryl Coward (@hoopfeed) has kept close track of the WNBA on Twitter and compiled an interesting list of awards I think you'll enjoy. You were, after all, voted the most intellectual fans on Twitter. Congrats.
