Storm All-Stars Swin Cash and Sue Bird headed to Russia
Posted by Jayda Evans
Swin Cash's "comeback" continues to be a success. The Storm F made it through USA Basketball training in Washington, D.C. last week and departed with the selected 12-member squad to play in a four-team tournament in Russia.
Storm PG Sue Bird, named as a core member, also traveled. A teammate of Cash's at Connecticut, Bird watched as Cash (pictured right) fought her way through back injuries, including outpatient surgery in March, to return as the high-caliber player Cash was while starring in Detroit. Cash was the 2009 All-Star game's MVP and led the Storm in scoring (21.0) in the opening-round defeat to Los Angeles last month.
Team USA opens the round-robin tournament against USK Praha on Oct. 9, followed by Euroleasing Sopron on Oct. 10 and caps the tournament against host and 2009 EuoLeague third place finisher UMMC Ekaterinburg on Oct. 11.
The play is in preparation for next September's World Championships in Czech Republic. Team USA will train in the spring, play majority of the WNBA season and then compete in the championships where an automatic berth to the 2012 Games is awarded the winner.
