Indiana post Yolanda Griffith out for season
Posted by Jayda Evans
Indiana C Yolanda Griffith (pictured right by the WNBA) is out for the season after suffering a left Achilles' tendon with 1:47 remaining in the opening quarter of Tuesday's win against Seattle. Griffith, 39, played last season with the Storm, appearing in 30 games.
Griffith, who signed with the Fever as a free agent to play her final season closer to her Chicago roots, made her name in Sacramento where she began her WNBA career after the ABL folded. She was named MVP and Defensive Player of the Year in 1999, and the 2005 Finals MVP when the Monarchs won the championship.
Her season-ending incident didn't involve any contact. Griffith's left leg buckled and she crumpled to the court. She was carried off the floor and then wheeled out of the arena for evaluations. Indiana led 18-13 at the time.
"We're so disappointed to lose Yolanda for the season," Indiana coach Lin Dunn said in a released statement. "In a very short period of time, she's already had huge impact on our team, and we can still benefit from her leadership abilities and championship experiences."
The Fever (1-2) are eligible to sign an emergency player to replace Griffith.
Storm F Swin Cash reported on Twitter that she's having dinner with her former teammate tonight. Seattle remained in Indianapolis for its off-day, traveling Thursday to play Minnesota on Friday.
