Across the WNBA, agents have wondered why the league held a three-round draft because of the difficulty in making a roster this season. Late-round picks Mara Freshour and Kimberly Beck (2008 pick) are the latest casualties, getting cut by the Storm today.

Freshour, a 6-foot-1 guard/forward from Florida State, knew she was a long shot when drafted. She said she'd try to play overseas if things didn't work in the WNBA and completed her degree as a backup plan.

Stating she was overwhelmed at everything being thrown at her during training camp, she played about seven minutes in Thursday's game against Sacramento, missing both shot attempts, grabbing a rebound and committing one foul.

Freshour was in a camp battle for the shooting guard/small forward position and needed to show an immediate ability to make shots. Especially since veteran F Katie Gearlds is being considered to possibly backup Swin Cash and invitees La'Tangela Atkinson and Aja Parham are also in the running.

Both of those players had better showings than Freshour on Thursday. Parham performed better in practice, but suffered from food poisoning prior to the game. Determined to play, she was 1-of-4 from the field, had two steals, one block, one board, and committed four fouls in 16 minutes. Atkinson was a highlight reel, finishing with five points, four boards, four assists, and two steals in 16 minutes.

Beck (pictured right) and A'Quonesia Franklin were battling for the PG position. Beck, a 5-8 George Washington product, was waived and re-signed last season. She has a good rapport with the team, but it seems the Storm is lacking on the wing and looking closer at those players.

Beck injured her right knee on a play against Sacramento, but didn't want to leave the game. "It'll probably be sore," today she said after playing 13 minutes and scoring three points with no assists. Franklin had three assists and three points in 18 minutes and the offense seemed to run a littler better with her. Beck has better conditioning, however.

The Storm is off today and expects G Tanisha Wright at camp this weekend. Her arrival will give the team 12 active players and two Australians overseas.
