Potato Chip diplomacy
Posted by Brian Cantwell
Lilli here:
Over the years, I've eaten all manner of bizarre snacks, partly due to travel and partly due to "Someone Let Papa Go Shopping Alone" syndrome. (You never know what he'll bring home.) Today, I was in for a combo of the two. I let him go into the Save-On-Foods store by himself, and he came back with a big bag of Old Dutch All-Dressed potato chips.
Brian:
In my defense, I have to ask: How else are you going to stretch your palate if you don't try new things when you travel? And it's double the fun when you have no idea what you're buying.
That's how we've ended up trying roasted dried peas coated in chili in Fiji. Or ordering "rocket" on a sandwich in Australia, not knowing it was their word for arugula. It's just healthy curiosity. My family doesn't always appreciate it. (They keep me away from the head cheese aisle.)
But when I saw these Old Dutch potato chips, a homegrown Canadian brand, with the label "All Dressed," I had to find out what the heck that meant. The package gave no clue. It had a little potato-chip man with a top-hat and cane, but what did that mean? This same company makes ketchup-flavored potato chips, so watch out.
Lilli again:
They turned out to be a mouth-pursing mixture of salt, vinegar and barbecue flavor. So now, due to my father's tendency to buy and test all foods he doesn't understand, I have been exposed once again to something new. And they were...well, a little weird, but strangely addictive. I'll admit, I'm still munching on them.
Brian:
They need beer. Lots of beer.
