Finding armchair adventure

Looking for adventure? A new book — "The New Age of Adventure: Ten Years of Great Writing" — includes some of the biggest names in adventure/travel writing.

Looking for adventure? A new book — "The New Age of Adventure: Ten Years of Great Writing" — includes some of the biggest names in adventure/travel writing.

Published by National Geographic ($16.95), it has pieces by Tim Cahill, Philip Caputo, Gretel Ehrlich, Sebastian Junger and Peter Matthiessen.

Over the years, the mission of the National Geographic Society, which publishes Adventure magazine, has changed from exploration to conservation. That attitude shift is reflected in the tales, which is not to say that good old-fashioned adventure stories are neglected.

Among the highlights are Junger's profile of an Afghan resistance fighter. But the collection also includes personal tales, such as war veteran Caputo's return to Vietnam to confront, and make peace with the ghosts that still haunt him, and Jon Bowermaster's journey with four friends and two kayaks among the remote Aleutian Islands.
