Storm damage closes road to Mount Rainier's Paradise for the weekend

Storm damage closes road to Paradise in Mount Rainier National Park; no access to popular snowplay area for the weekend.

There will be no access to the popular Paradise area of Mount Rainier National Park this weekend because of storm damage to a main park road.

"Significant damage" occurred to about 100 feet of road between Longmire and Paradise, with parts of the road sloughing off and making it unsafe for traffic, said a statement from the park's acting superintendent, Randy King.

The 5,400-foot-elevation Paradise area, where there's a large parking area and visitor center, is popular for sledding, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing in winter.

The lower-elevation Longmire area of the park will remain open, including the National Park Inn there. Ranger-led snowshoe walks, normally offered at Paradise, will be conducted at Longmire during the weekend, said park officials.

Get park and road information at www.nps.gov/mora or phone 360-569-2211.
