Ocean pollution warning issued for Oregon's Cannon Beach
High levels of bacteria in ocean at Cannon Beach and some other Oregon beaches.
CANNON BEACH, Ore. — State health officials have issued health advisories for high levels of bacteria in ocean waters at Cannon Beach and several beaches in Lincoln County.
Increased bacteria levels can come from both shore and inland sources.
Water samples indicate higher-than-normal levels of fecal bacteria, which can result in gastroenteritis, skin rashes, upper respiratory infections and other illnesses. Direct contact with the water should be avoided until the advisories are lifted.
While advisories are in effect, visitors should avoid wading in nearby creeks or in discolored water, and avoid water runoff flowing into the ocean.
Even with no advisory officials recommend that swimmers avoiding the ocean within 48 hours of a rainstorm.
