Mexico beaches for singles

Q: Where's the best place for singles (20s-30s) in Mexico? I'm thinking great beaches. I want to stay away from college/high-school spring-break places, but I also don't want to be stuck in a hotel surrounded by kids.

— Mary

A: For great beaches, it's hard to beat Cancún, which has miles of white sand beaches, a big choice of beachfront hotels and lots of bars/restaurants. And you'll find American tourists of all ages in Cancún. You definitely would want to avoid spring break (university and high-school breaks are in March and April), when it can be a zoo. And like everywhere, rates are higher at Christmas-New Year.

Another option is Los Cabos at the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula. It's smaller than Cancún, but also with good beaches and some bars/nightlife in the town of Cabo San Lucas; stay there rather than nearby San Jose del Cabo (those are the two main tourist towns that make up Los Cabos). You'll get some spring-break students there, but not like Cancún.

For a quieter beach town, there's Puerto Vallarta on Mexico's Pacific Coast. Or you could try a Club Med in Mexico, but choose carefully since some are definitely family-oriented.
