Spokane's "old" scenic route: First, get in the car...

For sightseeing in Spokane, here are directions for the "old" City Drive, a 32-mile scenic route:

Begin downtown at Sprague Avenue and Stevens Street and head south on Stevens. Keep right, merging onto Bernard Street.

Turn right at Sumner and head through this area of grand historic homes.

Turn right on Cliff Drive, where there's a turnout with a spectacular, panoramic view of Spokane.

Turn right on Grand Boulevard and pass the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist.

Continue to 18th Avenue, turn right into Manito Park. Spend time in the rose garden, walk through the greenhouse or visit the Japanese Garden — there's lots to do here.

The City Drive continues on Park Drive (grab a coffee at the Park Bench Cafe), then turn right on Tekoa Street to 25th Avenue. Turn left on 25th; it gets a little confusing here, but there are plenty of signs along the way.

Follow 25th Avenue across Grand Boulevard, bearing right on Garfield, looking for 26th Avenue. Turn left on 26th, then right on Arthur, to a full stop at 29th Avenue.

Turn left on 29th Avenue, then right on South Perry Street.

Keep going south on Perry past the Manito Golf and Country Club, then turn right on 57th Avenue.

Here, 57th Avenue merges with Hatch Road; you are now heading north toward downtown. Continue to 43rd Avenue, turn left, cross Grand Boulevard and keep right onto High Drive. Here, numerous turnouts offer views of the Latah Creek Valley and the Palouse Highway below.

Continue North on High Drive — at 29th Avenue a right turn will take you to Comstock Park, a great place for a picnic, with playgrounds and a pool.

To continue the City Drive, backtrack from Comstock to High Drive and continue north, merging onto Walnut Street. Go down the hill, under Interstate 90, then turn left at Second Avenue, which takes you straight into historic Browne's Addition. Turn right on Cannon Street — go through the roundabout — then take a left on First Avenue. The Museum of Arts and Culture and the historic Campbell House will soon appear on your right.

After a visit to the museum, keep going west on First Avenue, which turns into Poplar Street. Turn right on Pacific Avenue then follow Coeur d'Alene Street — here's a great view of Latah Creek and all the railroad bridges and High Bridge Park below — until Sunset Boulevard.

Turn right on Sunset and head up the hill — the Finch Arboretum will be on your left, ready for a stroll — as the City Drive continues up the hill to Assembly Street. Turn right there, pass Indian Canyon Golf Course, and proceed on Canyon Drive (Palisades Park is on your left) until Government Way. Turn left, and you'll be on the part of the Bloomsday running course known as Cemetery Hill.

Continue north to Fort George Wright Drive, turn right and go down the hill across the T.J. Meenach Bridge, making a right as soon as you cross the bridge. Follow the signs as the City Drive backtracks under the bridge and takes you onto Downriver Drive and into Riverside State Park, via the Aubrey White Parkway.

The views here are gorgeous as you continue along the river, and there are camping and picnic sites available throughout Riverside State Park.

One "must see" is the Bowl and Pitcher recreational site, where a hanging bridge crosses the Spokane River.

The City Drive continues north on the Parkway until Rifle Club Road; turn right on Nine Mile Road and keep right to merge onto Assembly, which passes near Joe Albi Stadium.

Turn left on Wellesley Avenue and continue to Alberta. Turn right, proceeding to Northwest Boulevard where you'll turn left. Keep going to Monroe Street, turn right and you're on your way back toward downtown.

Turn left on Boone Avenue, which will take you past the Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena. A right turn on Washington will take you south to Riverfront Park — and you're done.
