Should I be worried about hurricanes in late June or July?
Can you recommend a nicer family hotel that is safe?
— Lisa Littleton, Colorado
A: Some insiders on the Web say hurricane season doesn't start until late summer at Cabo, but when my family was in Baja on a sailing cruise, the common knowledge was that by June you were taking a risk in those waters.
And when we did sail northward in early June, a hurricane was chasing us a few hundred miles back. (Luckily, it went one way, we went another.)
So while rates are often lower in summer, "you pays your money and you takes your chances," as the saying goes.
That said, Pacific hurricanes are rarer than in the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico because the water is colder.
A good source for researching hotels is www.tripadvisor.com, with lots of good feedback from happy (or unhappy) guests.
For a nice-looking place in Cabo with some multibedroom options, I like the looks of The Bungalows Hotel, www.cabobungalows.com.
