Beachcombers beware: Small canisters washing up on Washington coast may contain pesticide

OCEAN SHORES, Wash. — The Washington Ecology Department says small, silver, unmarked canisters washing up on ocean beaches from Ocean Shores north to Ozette likely held fumigants used to kill pests in the cargo holds of oceangoing ships.

The exact source is unknown. But because of the potential health risk, Ecology officials and the Coast Guard are cooperating in an effort to collect the containers and dispose of them.

After studying a photo of the one-liter bottles, Ecology staffers searched the Internet and found similar containers produced by overseas companies. The bottles typically contain 500 fumigant tablets meant to be spread throughout a cargo hold.

Anyone who spots one of the containers is asked to note its location and call Ecology's environmental hotline in Olympia. That number is 360-407-6300.
