Here are some other places where art and history meet:

Rosa Bonheur: The French artist is best-known in the United States for her show-stopping painting "The Horse Fair" — a billboard-sized tribute to equine form at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. But her home near Paris, the Chateau de By, is a fascinating look into the life of a trailblazing lesbian in the mid-1800s. In Thomery, just east of Paris; http://systhome.free.fr/musee.php.

Frederic E. Church : The famous Hudson Valley School painter built a Persian-style home with extensive (and picturesque) views of his beloved Hudson Valley in upstate New York. Tour information: www.olana.org.

Salvador Dali: His home in the Spanish/Catalonian town of Portlligat is full of odd objects, jarring decor and thought-provoking artworks, but if you had to choose one Dali landmark, check out the surrealist museum he built in Figueres: www.salvador-dali.org.

Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera: Kahlo's "Casa Azul," or Blue House, was her birthplace and her final resting place. It is a repository of her art, ideas and artifacts: www.museofridakahlocasaazul.org/.

Rembrandt: Rembrandt's home/studio in Amsterdam is fascinating not only for the perspective it gives on the artist, but also on life in 17th-century Holland. The top-floor studio, with high north-facing windows, lets you see the light the way the artist did: www.rembrandthuis.nl.

Georgia O'Keeffe: O'Keeffe rivals Monet when it comes to being strongly identified with one place in her life and work. For O'Keeffe it was the northern New Mexico landscape, and the objects she found there. Her home at Abiquiu is open for tours by appointment; phone 505-685-4539.

Wyeth Family House: In Chadds Ford, Pa., the N.C. Wyeth House and Studio was the base for a remarkable family of fine artists, including N.C. Wyeth, son Andrew Wyeth and grandson James Wyeth. The Brandywine River Museum owns the house and has well-rounded collections from all the Wyeth artists; www.brandywinemuseum.org.
