If you're driving on Interstate 5 in Oregon on Saturday, be ready for a traffic jam. Both the Ducks and Beavers are playing home football games in the afternoon, and traffic could move at the pace of another animal — a snail.
Upwards of 100,000 fans will be on the road, doubling the normal amount of traffic on the freeway, said Joe Schieman, incident response coordinator for the state Department of Transportation in the Corvallis area.
The Ducks game is at 4 p.m. at the University of Oregon in Eugene. The Beavers play at 3.30 p.m. at Oregon State in Corvallis.
To add to the congestion, an annual Oktoberfest celebration at Mount Angel will bring more traffic to the Willamette Valley area
Police are warning drivers to leave plenty of extra time for their trip and to take an alternate route if possible.
The transportation department has suspended its extensive road work in the Eugene area for Saturday, and it will remove cones to return the freeway temporarily from two lanes to three on the northbound side.
