After the storm

Residents of Mexico's Baja California peninsula were mopping up last week after Hurricane John hit some areas with heavy rain and winds.

The resort area of Los Cabos at its southern tip was mostly spared by the storm last weekend, but there were a handful of deaths in Baja, many caused by flash flooding after some isolated areas received more than 20 inches of rain. At least three Mexican citizens drowned; a Californian died while surfing in the wind-whipped waves near Todos Santos; and a British tourist died when his trailer was swept away by a swollen river.

Many tourists fled Los Cabos before the storm, but damage to hotels was slight in its resort towns of Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo.

The city of La Paz on the east coast suffered the most damage, with streets and some buildings flooded and electric power poles downed. Many homes lost roofs.
