Lacock info:
• Lacock Abbey is open from March through October; admission is about $13 for an adult with discounts for children. At the abbey's visitor/ticket center, there's a small shop plus a display on photography pioneer William Fox Talbot.

• The National Trust Web site, www.nationaltrust.org.uk, has details on Lacock Abbey, and most guidebooks to Britain also have some information.

Getting there:
Lacock is in western England, near the cities of Bath and Bristol. It can be reached by frequent First Great Western trains from London's Paddington railway station en route to Bristol. Get off at the town of Chippenham (about 1-½ hours from London) then take a taxi or Bus 234 to Lacock, about three miles away. A taxi costs about $12 one way (there's a taxi stand at the train station.) Bus service is infrequent, but you can check the bus schedule in the village and time your return accordingly or book a taxi. Train information: National Rail Enquiries, www.nationalrail.co.uk.

Staying in Lacock:
If you want more time in Lacock, stay overnight in one of its several B&Bs and take a country walk on easygoing footpaths or explore nearby villages. You might even spot Camilla Parker Bowles, Prince Charles' girlfriend, who lives about a mile from Lacock.

• Lacock B&Bs include King John's Hunting Lodge, a small inn with heavy wood beams and whitewashed walls; some rooms date to the 13th century. There's a restaurant and tea room: kingjohnslodge.2day.ws/

• For more on lodgings, including nearby farm-cottage rentals and the tranquil Lacock Pottery B&B near the village church, see lacock.2day.ws/
