Some top B&B Web sites

• The Web site www.bedandbreakfast.com lists 27,000 U.S. and foreign properties, recommends those vetted by the staff and indicates which B&Bs in a given area are offering discounted rooms for the coming weekend.

• Pamela Lanier's Bed & Breakfast Guide (www.lanierbb.com) features 27,000 places worldwide and is updated frequently.

• BNB Finder (www.bnbfinder.com) lists 4,500 properties in the United States, organized by state, and includes deals and specials for groups, such as seniors.

• International Bed-and-breakfast Pages (www.ibbp.com) lists 2,000 B&Bs worldwide. It's far from complete, but links to more B&Bs abroad than most of its competitors. One feature uses guests' comments to rate properties.

• Bed & Breakfast (GB) (800-454-8704, www.bedbreak.com) and its sister company feature dozens of properties in England and France. We found many of the London properties clean and stylish.

• The site www.londonbb.com (011-44-20-7586-2768) is a well-established company with a range of properties in London.

• Mobil Travel Guides (www.mobiltravelguide.com) features hundreds of lodgings in the United States, including B&Bs. The site lets users search by level of property desired. Its strong suit is reliability: All of the properties listed have been inspected by agents and given a rating.

• PlacestoStay (www.placestostay.com) includes more B&Bs or small guesthouses than most major online booking agencies, and provides links to the properties' own Web sites. Some of the B&Bs featured advertise special deals.

• AAA (www.aaa.com) is one of the few sites that rates all forms of lodging, from full-scale resorts to small B&Bs, and grants diamonds based on the level of amenities and service. Although only a small fraction of its properties are B&Bs, the rankings are reputable.
