Heaters proposed to keep light-rail switches snow-free
Sound Transit proposes to spend $2.4 million on heaters for some light-rail track switches, so trains could still operate if an ice storm strikes the South Seattle line.
Sound Transit wants to spend $2.4 million on heaters for some light-rail track switches, so trains could still operate if an ice storm strikes the South Seattle line.
Electric wires would warm the steel switches enough to melt falling snow or ice pellets, said spokesman Bruce Gray. Heaters will be at the elevated SeaTac/Airport Station, where trains change from southbound to northbound and at the Sodo overpass where trains leave the maintenance base. Most of the 50 heaters will be inside the base.
Transit officials wanted to add heaters after the ice storm of mid-December 2008. Sounder commuter trains were delayed two hours after a Seahawks game, and part of Portland's light-rail system closed.
Sound Transit's finance committee endorsed the idea Thursday, and it goes to the full executive board for final passage next week.
