Seattle sets record for cold
Posted by Susan Gilmore
Seattle recorded an all-time low temperature for this date Friday when the temperatures dipped to 21 degrees at 4 a.m., breaking the record of 22 degrees set in 1962.
"Don't get too excited about spring coming too soon," was the reaction of Andy Haner, National Weather Service meteorologist in Seattle, who is forecasting below-normal temperatures for next week.
He said some areas of Western Washington, though not the Seattle area, could see more snow Saturday night. On Monday and Tuesday, when a cold front arrives, temperatures should dip low enough to produce mixed rain and snow showers.
The mountain passes should get hammered over the weekend, said Haner, who expects there may be up to a foot of snow Sunday on Interstate 90. "That will make travel across I-90 challenging," he said.
He also said the threat of avalanches will be high this weekend so backpackers heading into the mountains should be aware of the danger.
