DOT identifies worker killed by falling tree

Posted by Janet Tu

The Washington State Department of Transportation worker killed Sunday night by a falling tree south of Carnation has been identified as Billy Rhynalds, a 12-year veteran of the department maintenance team based in Preston.

Rhynalds, 66, was setting up traffic cones along Highway 203 at about 9 p.m. when a cottonwood tree fell and hit him and his truck during the rainstorm.

He had been called out to help close roads and clear water on Highways 202 and 203.

Rhynalds, of North Bend, is survived by his wife, Betty, and a large extended family including children, grandchildren, brothers and sisters.

The Department of Transportation is providing peer trauma support for its employees.
