The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory through Monday evening for much of Western Washington.

The advisory is in effect for the Seattle area, the Olympic Mountains, north and central Cascades, the passes, the I-5 corridor from Olympia through Chehalis, Whatcom and Skagit counties and the Strait of Juan de Fuca.

The weather service said 2 to 4 inches of new snow is expected in the Cascades Sunday afternoon, and the mountains could get another 3 to 7 inches from Stevens Pass south on Monday.

Snow also is expected to fall more heavily through Monday from Olympia to Chehalis, with up to 1 or 2 inches Sunday and another one to 3 inches Monday. the foothills and east of I-5 could get up to 4 inches, the weather service said.

With winds gusting from 15 to 25 miles per hour and temperatures falling into the 20s Sunday evening, the wind chill may fall into the teens.

The strait of Juan de Fuca also may see some light snow, though the Olympics could get 1 to 3 inches through Monday morning. the area also could see a dangerous wind chill with falling temperatures and a north wind from 20 to 30 miles per hour and with gusts up to 40 miles per hour.

Western Whatcom and Skagit counties have a light snow forecast, but wind also is expected to blow harder through Monday, the weather service said.

Drivers should prepare for winter driving conditions and the Weather Service advises travelers to carry warm clothes in case of driving delays.

The Seattle area is under a winter weather advisory through Monday evening.

A few flakes already are falling in many neighborhoods Sunday afternoon. The National Weather Service expects up to 2 inches of snow accumulation in different parts of the Seattle area.

Highs are expected to be in the 30s, with 10-mph winds. By Sunday night, forcasts call for mostly cloudy skies, with scattered snow showers and lows dipping to the 20s.

For the beginning of the work week, expect some snow throughout Monday morning, with 1-3 inches of accumulation. Winds are expected to increase to up to 30 mph in the afternoon. By late f Monday, skies will clear, and it will be cold and windy, with lows of 15-25 degrees.

Tuesday is expected to be clear and cold with highs in the low-30s.

For those seeking a warm place to stay overnight, the Crossroads Community Center in Bellevue will be open Sunday through Tuesday night. The shelter can accommodate up to 50 people. People can check into the center at 16000 N.E. 10th St. starting at 8:30 p.m.
