This blog post coming to you, as I drive back from a very nice, but brief, visit with my parents in Paso Robles, from the Bob's Big Boy in Sun Valley (San Fernando Valley), Yes, I'm continuing my Burger Blog Tour of SoCal. (Note to Geoff Baker: Forget discussing the Mariners' woes. Nothing fires up you folks like burger rivalries). Bob's Big Boy has a real warm place in my heart, because when i was growing up in Whittier, our family's No. 1 dinner-out spot was the Bob's on Whittier Blvd. I'm gratified to see they still have the same statue of Bob out front, holding the giant hamburger. (Judging by the stares I'm getting, I don't think anyone's ever set up a computer in one of their booths before).

OK, down to business. The Mariners have shaken up their roster a little bit. They signed right-handed pitcher Jamey Wright, a free agent, to a contract, and selected left-handed pitcher Chris Sneddon from Tacoma. Both will be in uniform tonight against the Angels.

To make room, Sean White has been optioned to Tacoma. So was Chad Cordero, but he declined his option and became a free agent. The M's 40-man roster is now at 38.

We won't know for sure until we talk to Don Wakamatsu this afternoon, but I'd guess Seddon could move into the Cliff Lee rotation spot, which comes up Monday at Safeco.

Here are the bios of the players involved from the Mariners' press release (lunch has arrived):

Seddon, 26, is 10-4 with a 3.39 ERA (38 ER, 101.0 IP) in 18 games, 15 starts with Tacoma. He was named a PCL All-Star (did not pitch last night in game played in Allentown, PA) and is tied for the league lead in wins (10), shutouts (2) and complete games (2). He was named the PCL Pitcher of the Week June 14-20 after throwing a complete game shutout June 15 at Colorado Springs.

Originally signed by Seattle as a minor league free agent on Dec. 1, 2008, Seddon has combined to go 19-12, 4.02 (104 ER, 232.2 IP) in 43 games, 39 starts over the last two seasons with Tacoma.

Seddon appeared in 7 games (4 starts) with the Florida Marlins in 2007. He went 0-2, 8.83 ERA (17 ER, 17.1 IP) with 10 strikeouts and one walk. He was originally selected by Tampa Bay in the 5th round of the 2001 June draft.

Wright, 35, opted out of his contract at AAA Sacramento (Oakland affiliate) and signed with the Mariners as a major league free agent. He started the season with Cleveland, going 1-2 with a 5.48 ERA (13 ER, 21.1 IP) in 18 relief appearances. He was designated for assignment on June 4 and became a free agent on June 14. He signed with Oakland as a minor league free agent on June 16 and made 10 appearances for Sacramento (1-0, 1 SV, 9.00 ERA).

The Oklahoma City, OK native is 83-117 with a 5.03 ERA in 438 appearances (246 starts) over his 15-season Major League career. Wright is no stranger to Seattle, having spent spring training with Mariners in 2003. He has appeared in major league games for seven different teams (Colorado, Milwaukee, Kansas City, Texas, San Francisco, St. Louis, Cleveland). Over the last three seasons (since '08), Wright ranks 2nd among AL relievers with 184.2 innings pitched.

Cordero, 28, appeared in 9 games for the Mariners, going 0-1 with a 6.52 ERA (7 ER, 9.2 IP). As a player with more than 5 years service time, he elected to decline his option to AAA Tacoma and becomes a free agent. He was selected from AAA Tacoma on June 3 (Ken Griffey Jr. retirement) and made his Mariners debut the following day vs. the Los Angeles Angels. It was his first MLB appearance since April 29, 2008 vs. Atlanta (with Washington Nationals) after recovering from right shoulder surgery. In 17 games with Tacoma, went 0-1 with 6 saves and a 4.12 ERA (9 ER, 19.2 IP).

White, 29, is 0-0 with a 6.86 ERA (16 ER, 21.0 IP) in 25 relief appearances with the Mariners. He posted a 2.92 ERA (4 ER, 12.1 IP) through his first 15 relief appearances, but has since recorded a 12.46 ERA (12 ER, 8.2 IP) with a .500 opponents batting average (20x40) in his last 10 appearances (since 6/4). He had a short stint with AAA Tacoma, appearing in 4 games for the Rainiers (1-0, 0.00 ERA) from May 21-31.
