Dave Sims takes a memorable NCAA hoops detour

Mariners announcer Dave Sims is back in Peoria and the leisurely pace of spring training baseball after spending a frenetic few days calling some classic games in the NCAA basketball tournament.
Sims drew the Spokane regional, which featured back-to-back barnburners on Sunday to get into the Final Four. Purdue beat Texas A & M 63-61 in overtime on a Chris Kramer layup with 4.2 second remaining, and Michigan State dumped Maryland 85-83 on Korie Lucious's three-pointer at the buzzer.
Sims, who has done college basketball since 1991, was working the radio broadcasts for Westwood One. His broadcasts with analyst P.J. Carlesimo were also picked up by Sirius Satellite Radio and NCAA On-Demand.
"I love it,'' Sims said. "I'm easily one of the luckiest guys in the country. That's like the best 96 hours in sports. You get to watch practice all day Wednesday, do games all day Thursday, talk it about it Friday, and games Saturday.
"The energy is unbelievable. It's very visceral for me. I feel all of that stuff. I feel it here, too, but I really feel it in hoops - you're right there.''
Sims has done basketball on ESPN over the years as well. The difference between radio and television, he said, "is apples and hand grenades, man. They're not the same thing. I love the fact on radio you have to over-describe everything. On TV, you just sort of put a caption under it.''
Sims' basketball stint is over now, and he'll concentrate on preparing for his fourth season on the Mariners broadcast crew.
