Bedard's bullpen session called off, but Griffin says it's not a setback

Geoff Baker talked to Milton Bradley this morning about his ejections. Check it out.

Erik Bedard, recovering from torn-labrum surgery, had been hoping to throw a bullpen session off a mound on Tuesday -- his first since surgery on Aug. 14. However, the Mariners made the decision not to have him do that, and Bedard will continue to long-toss.

"He's not ready, in our opinion,'' said trainer Rick Griffin. "We don't want to push him.''

Griffin stressed that this is not a setback, noting that the bullpen session was "a best-case scenario.''

"He's so far ahead of what he's supposed to be. It was supposed to be 10 months to a year, and we're only at seven months. He's doing very well, He's still far ahead of where he's supposed to be. What we're doing is making sure there's no setbacks. We want him to progress on a steady line, and he's been doing that so far.''

The next step will be a flat-ground bullpen, which he has done once, last week. Griffin explained that throwing off a mound changes the bio-mechanics of the shoulder and adds considerable stress.

"I remember Nolan Ryan told Randy Johnson one time that as he got older, he didn't throw bullpen sessions off the mound. A lot of time he'd do it on flat ground because of the increased pressure of throwing on a downward plane, especially after a game in which he threw a lot of pitches. Randy started doing that.

"A lot of times, when guys are re-habbing shoulders, they progress and never have a problem, and are going real smooth, but the first time they throw on a mound they have a little setback, because it's such a big change. That's what we're trying to avoid. We want to continue to progress forwards."

In other injury news, Cliff Lee (abdominal strain) will play catch tomorrow and see how he feels, Griffin said. He did cardio work yesterday and today will do shoulder exercises in a pool. Jack Hannahan (right groin strain) will take grounders today for the first time in a week.
