Update 5 p.m.: The Baseball Writers Association of American has released the NL Cy Young voting because of heightened interest in the close results. I have posted those votes at the end of this thread, after Lincecum's quotes).

Here's some of what Tim Lincecum (shown above at a press conference in San Francisco today) said this afternoon on his conference call with reporters after winning his second Cy Young in two years:

On his reaction to getting the news this morning: "I actually jumped out my window -- maybe not per se, but I had to go to the window to get better reception. I was equally excited (compared to last year). It was a great moment for me, and I was able to share it with a couple of people close to me - my dad, my brother and my girlfriend, so that was good."

On how he thought the voting would go: "I really didn't know. Both the guys I was going up against in (Adam) Wainwright and (Chris) Carpenter had tremendous seasons. Given that - especially what Carpenter came off (numerous arm injuries), and what Wainwright did as a workhorse, I didn't know how the cards were going to fall. It was a lucky one for me. I'll take them as they come, I guess."

On how he's changed as a pitcher: "I'm a different pitcher. I think just time alone and experience alone changes a player. You see batters over again, you see teams, you see approaches, and you start to make conscious changes in your mind to become better and learn to pitch. I kind of figured it out. In college, I was up and down - I pitched up and down in the strike zone. At this level, it's more in and out and off the plate. You're using the up and downs only when you need to."

On his earlier comment that he was lucky: Just because everybody kind of had their own little show-off. Carpenter what he came off, and Wainwright, like I said, was a workhorse. I feel like I had something to show, too. As far as the votes, I didn't really know how it was going to fall. It was lucky in the fact it was so close that I was the one that came on top."

More on his growth: "I've always walked a lot of guys. Just to get those numbers down, and get my WHIP (walks and hits per innings pitched) down. That was my big number. Obviously, ERA - but to say which one I look at most, I'd say WHIP, because you want to limit the number of baserunners that can hurt you.

On whether he knew of FIP (Fielding Independent Pitching), a stat cited earlier this week by AL Cy Young winner Zack Greinke: "I've heard of of it - Fielder Independent Pitching, I think. I'm not completely familiar with it, but I've heard the expression."

On whether the fact that he and Lincecum won despite relatively low win totals reflects a change in statistical evaluation of pitchers: "You see where it's taken a turn to a game of complete numbers and stats and what people do with that. It's put more options in the voters' heads, to decide which is more important. That's all based on opinion. When there's so many numbers to be looked at, it makes the votes more varying. It's just completely different and a lot more skewed. It's hard to come out with a definite."

On being in the same company as back-to-back winners like Sandy Koufax, Pedro Martinez and Roger Clemens: "It's a tremendous honor for me, especially the fact that these are big feats any pitcher wants to do. It's that cherry on top, just to be up here and do what I've done in the time I've done it. It just means the world. I want to keep getting better like the one guy that should be mentioned who helped me, (2009 Giants teammate) Randy Johnson. He kept winning Cy after Cy. I want to try to do that, try to replicate that. I want to do what I can to get better."

On how Johnson helped him: "Just reiteration - you can just keep getting better at this game, and never be content with what you've done. Next year, it doesn't matter what I did this year; it's just a matter of what you're doing now. I take more of that approach to it. I learned from that a little bit this year. I always said I try to get better off every game. I took it that small."

Here is the Cy Young voting (two votes per NL city). Note that national internet writers generally vote for the chapter located in their city of residence (this is just the second year that the BBWAA has let non-print journalists into their organization). Also note that two internet writers with strong statistical backgrounds, Keith Law of ESPN and Will Carroll of Basebal Prospectus, both left Chris Carpenter off their three-man ballot. And finally, and perhaps most interestingly, note that both members of the San Francisco/Oakland chapter -- Lincecum's hometown writers -- had him second behind Carpenter:
